Africa records surge in COVID-19 cases as Omicron spreads

The Delta and Omicron variants of the coronavirus have driven infections up by nearly 83 percent in Africa.
That is the fastest surge of cases anywhere in the world this year, mainly because Africa has the lowest vaccination rates of any region in the world.
African countries are struggling to get doses through the United Nations-backed COVAX scheme.
And growing vaccine hesitancy is also a concern.
