As Hurricane Irma barrels toward the state of Florida, and Governor Rick Scott does the best he can to prepare the state for what could be a Hurricane Andrew-like disaster, photos and videos from Irma’s devastation continue to go viral. Social media has been buzzing over many photos which depict Irma’s wrath on the small island of Barbuda.
According to reports, 90% of the structures on the Eastern Caribbean island have been wiped out. With a population of just under 1800, the island will certainly have a difficult time rebuilding and recovering from this horrendous disaster. Some wonder if rebuilding will even be an option.
The eye of Irma passed right over Barbuda, and while the instrument which reads wind speed on the island broke after registering a 154 MPH gust, it is believed that they may have experienced winds of up to 185 MPH.
“Barbuda right now is literally a rubble,” Prime Minister Gaston Browne of Antigua and Barbuda explained in an interviewer with ABS TV/Radio Antigua. “The entire housing stock was damaged. It is just a total devastation.”
Individuals on Twitter have been sharing and discussing photos and videos of the devastation, some of which are unbelievably sad. Below you will find some of these images and videos of the horrendous aftermath of Hurricane Irma’s effects on Barbuda.
