The feud between Chicago Mayor Rahm Emmanuel and President Donald Trump has been going on for quite some time now. Much of it started when Trump criticized the city for its violent crimes, but it has overflowed to many other issues as well.
With yesterday’s announcement that President Trump has now decided to terminate the much supported DACA immigration program, Chicago Mayor Rahm Emmanuel held a press conference in which he comforted “Dreamers” in his city, as well as attacked President Trump yet again — this time essentially banning him from the city altogether.
While the ban isn’t an official ban, Emmanuel declared Chicago a “Trump-free zone”.
“To all the dreamers who are here in this room and in the city of Chicago, you are welcomed in the city of Chicago,” Emmanuel emphatically stated. “This is your home and you have nothing to worry about. Chicago, our schools, our neighborhoods, our city, as it related to what President Trump said, will be a ‘Trump-free zone’.”
While the term “Trump-free zone” is probably more to emphasize the fact that Trump’s desire to deport ‘Dreamers’ will not be upheld within the city, it’s doubtful that Trump will be visiting Chicago anytime soon. If he does, there probably isn’t anything the city can actually do to constitutionally keep him out.
“You have nothing to worry about,” Emmanuel continued. “I want you to know this and I want your families to know this, and rest assured, I want you to come to school, but more than just come to school, pursue your dreams.”
Emmanuel then went on to boast about his city’s free community college program which allows anyone who gets a B-average in high school to attend community college free of charge. He emphasized that this program is “open to dreamers”.
It’s truly amazing how the words of Emmanuel are so inspirational, as opposed to Trump’s doom and gloom attitude toward immigrants. If we go back to President George H.W. Bush and Ronald Reagan, they too had a similar attitude as Emmanual does. It surprises me that Republicans are so quick to agree with Trump’s ideologies on immigration, while it has long been a part of the GOP’s plan to create an atmosphere where immigration is not seen as being detrimental to this nation. It was immigration that got us to where we are today as the greatest country on Earth.
