Watch As Ronald Reagan & George Bush Argued Against a Border Wall

Over and over again, you hear Trump supporters trying to compare President Trump to former President Ronald Reagan. This is because Reagan has gone down in history as one of the most recognized presidents of the past century, and his presidency garners respect from most historians. This is a flawed argument though, and if Reagan were alive today my bet is that he would have many issues with the 45th President.

We’ve already seen George H. W. Bush as well as his son George W. Bush come out with harsh criticism of Donald Trump, but unfortunately Reagan is no long alive to provide the GOP with his own opinion. We do, however, have old videos in which some of today’s policy debates were also in discussion during the time of Ronald Reagan.

The year was 1980 and George H.W. Bush was running against Ronald Reagan in the Republican primaries. We all know that Reagan ended up as the Republican nominee, taking Bush as his running mate, and later defeating Jimmy Carter to win the Presidency.

As you can see in the video below, both George H.W. Bush and Ronald Reagan were asked about immigration, particularly immigrants coming in from Mexico. Both of these former presidents gave opinions which would strictly contradict those of current President Donald J. Trump.

Both candidates, Bush and Reagan were asked, “Do you think that the children of illegal aliens should be allowed to attend Texas public schools for free, or do you think that their parents should pay for their education?”

“I would like to see something done about the illegal alien problem that would be so sensitive and so understanding about labor needs and human needs, that that problem wouldn’t come up,” George H.W. Bush responded. He then went on to say that he believed that these kids should receive what society gives to everyone else, before continuing, “The problem has to be solved because as we have kind of made illegal some kinds of labor that I’d like to see legal, we are doing two things: We are creating a whole society of really honorable, decent, family loving people that are in violation of the law and secondly we are exacerbating relations with Mexico.”

Bush then went on to explain how he is not in support of alienating 6 and 8 year old children, saying that the illegal Mexican immigrants are “good people, strong people.”

Then it was Ronald Reagan’s turn to discuss his opinion on illegal Mexican immigrants.

“Rather than talking about putting up a fence, why don’t we work out some recognition of our mutual problems and make it possible for them to come here legally, with a work permit, and then while they are working and earning here, they pay taxes here,” Reagan stated. “And when they want to go back, they can go back, and they can cross. And open the border both ways, by understanding their problems — this is the safety valve right now they have with that unemployment.”

Over and over again, I’ve told current Republicans that Trump’s ideologies are NOT the same as those ideologies that the GOP had in decades past. Trump’s ideologies are not the ideologies that were shared by my Republican grandparents. Our past generations did not support alienating ourselves from the rest of the world, no matter what party they were a part of.

Today, I’m finding that many Republicans support Trump simply because he claims to be a “Republican”, but in terms of history, he is far from being a member of the GOP. Let’s hear your thoughts? Do you think Reagan would be turning in his grave at the idea of building a border wall and kicking DREAMERS out of this country? Let’s hear in the comments section below.
